Tis the season – for lost pets

Christmas, New Year and summer are the most common times of year for pets to go missing.

While we’re out late enjoying the warm weather and socialising, our pets are left at home alone. And they can get lonely and bored, because they’re social animals too! So they’re more likely to wander, or escape, in search of summer fun when we’re AWOL.

The extra stress of fireworks going off at unpredictable times over summer, especially at New Year is another reason there are more lost pets.

So when you head out for another long summer evening with friends and family, think twice about your pets. What can you do to help make them as comfortable and safe as possible? Can they be locked safely inside with a litter box, some food, water and some toys?

If your pet suffers from a fear of fireworks, close the curtains and leave the radio on. Ideally plan to host New Year celebrations at home, so you can be with your pets.

It’s important that your pets are microchipped and registered and wearing a collar and ID tag with your mobile number. Desex your pets at an early age, so they’re less likely to wander in search of a summer romance. Having good up to date identifying pictures and full descriptions stored on your cellphone means you can list them as lost quickly if you need to.

When your pets are happy and safe, you’ll both enjoy your summer even more. Happy summer everyone!
